Express Yourself Color-ready Fibers
Timeless Touches™ Express Yourself Color-ready Fibers are an exciting new concept in embellishment fibers, allowing you to completely customize your project! At first glance, they appear to simply be white or natural colored fibers while in fact they are “ready to dye”. While many other “white” fibers have been either dyed or coated, Express Yourself Color-ready Fibers are specially prepared to take and hold dye.
Traditionally, these fibers are dyed with fiber reactive dyes, but we have found several much simpler ways to color small amounts of fiber. There’s no mixing, measuring, or clean up; you can use items you already have in your craft supply stash!
Tips:
Always work on a piece of waxed paper or plastic wrap to protect your work surface from the ink.
Using permanent pigment pens, apply color to the fiber by simply coloring. We find that a brush pen is the easiest tip to use, but you can use any kind you have on hand.
Use pigment ink that comes in a small pad, stamping the fiber lightly until the desired color intensity is achieved. We like Dauber Duosä from Tsukineko and Color Box® Cat’s Eye pads from Clearsnap. They’re both small, making it easy to control the placement of the ink.
Whichever form of ink you use, cover all sides of the fiber with the ink. Or, for a textured or pastel look, stamp or color lightly, allowing the original shade of the fiber to show through.
Let the fiber sit for about an hour, then wipe gently with a paper towel to check for excess ink. If you’ve used a light touch with the ink, you may not need to wait this long for it to dry. If you have saturated the fiber thoroughly, allow it to dry for another hour. You may need to let it set overnight, depending on the amount of ink used and the humidity in your area. Using a heat tool may help speed up the drying process.
Feel free to experiment with other methods of “dying” the fiber, but remember to always check it with a paper towel before adhering it to your project.
